In its third annual ‘The Way We Bank Now’ report, the BBA revealed that mobile banking apps were used 11 million times a day in 2015, up 57.1% on the previous year.
Meanwhile, the report highlighted data from research specialist CACI which predicted that visits to bank branches will fall from 476 million in 2011 to just 185 million in 2021, despite overall customer interactions with their bank rising.
Anthony Browne, CEO of the BBA, said: “We are in the midst of a consumer-led revolution in the way we do our day-to-day banking.
“Customers love the new technology that is allowing us to bank round the clock.
“The choice now on offer from banks, from state-of-the-art branches to cutting-edge apps, has put customers firmly in the driving seat on the way we bank.”
The BBA also found that payments made using mobile apps grew from 122 million in 2014 to 347 million last year.
In addition, the use of contactless cards rose 250%, with £1.1bn spent in March 2016.
In May it was revealed that the number of smart cards featuring contactless technology rose 24% between 2014 and 2015.
Robert Cubbage, UK banking and capital markets leader at EY, added: “It’s a challenging but truly transformational time for banking.
“The sector is evolving fast, with almost all areas of financial management becoming simpler, more accessible and more dynamic for consumers.
“For the banks themselves this means there are now more opportunities than ever before to engage with customers.”
