Search Engine Opimisation (SEO) Tips – Part 6
The importance of choosing your keywords & content...
When deciding what keywords you want to target with your website there is only one factor that you need to When deciding what keywords to target your website there is only one thing to consider ... What Are People Actually Searching For?
If you don't know what your potential visitors are searching for then you are doomed. Google offer a free tool that gives you an idea of what people are searching for, which you can find here. By putting your main keyword into this tool you can see the 100 top keywords and what their approximate searches are per month for the location and language you choose. You have to bear in mind that this tool is offered for free so just gives an indication. It is always better to consult with a professional as they will be able to give you a better insight into your visitors.
Once you know what people are searching for you can ensure that your content is targeted towards the correct keywords and your potential visitors. The last thing you want to do is to spend a lot of time writing content for your site only to find that people are not searching for what you have written about.
Let's say your website is selling dog training products. The keyword dog training gets approximately 165,000 searches per month in English in the UK. Due to this high search volume and the high level competition in Google (about 26,000,000 results) we can ascertain that this is not a great keyword to go after. Not only will it take a lot of time to get to page one let alone position one, it is also too broad a keyword. Someone searching for dog training might be looking for books or dvd's on dog training or dog training classes, we have no way of knowing.
As we go down the list highest searches to lowest searches we can see keywords like dog training collars with 5,400 searches per month and dog training leads with 2,400 searches per month. Yes, these keywords have a lot less searches per month, but they are a lot more targeted. Someone searching for dog training collars is looking for that specific product.
In this case you would ensure that you have a page targeted to dog training collars and that together with the relevant products you have 400 words or so of content relating directly to dog training collars.
The content is the important part as without relevant content the search engines cannot decide what keywords to rank you for. They will also not want to rank you above other people's sites if they do have relevant content.
Next week I'll go over a special file that is not a necessity, but that can boost your website rankings within 24 hours.
