Katie-Jill Rowland speaks to Rob Jarvis of Blemain Group...
1. How long have you been at Blemain Group?
I’ve been at Blemain Group for three and a half years now. Before that, I worked at Hastings Direct as an Insurance Sales Agent. I think the opportunity to work at Blemain Group came at a perfect time; as I was ready for a new challenge and wanted to be at a company that has exciting opportunities and fresh ideas.
2. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
I always wanted to be a chef and own my own restaurant. Mostly because I love good food.
B&C: And your signature dish?
Well I’d like to think I could give Gordon Ramsey a run for his money on most things but I guess it’s got to be Banoffee Pie, at 1000 calories per slice it isn’t for the faint hearted.
3. If you could do anything you wanted this Sunday, what would it be?
I’d go for a walk in my local park with my girlfriend and have a picnic. In fact, I may just do that (weather permitting).
B&C: Would the picnic include your legendary Banoffee Pie?
Of course, just a small slice though.
4. What’s the best thing about your job?
Well it’s a cliché but every day really is different when you’re dealing with such varied brokers so it keeps it interesting. I work with a great team who put up with me but I also work with some brilliant third parties. The great thing about Blemain Group is that we are always on the lookout for new and exciting opportunities.
B&C: And the worst?
The worst thing is probably not being able to switch off. If there’s something that needs resolving or an exciting new case; it’s difficult to just walk out the office and think about dealing with it tomorrow. It’s fast paced and keeps you on your feet so it’s a good thing really, or I wouldn’t be able to get up in the morning.
5. What would you be doing if you weren’t working in this industry?
Well I would definitely have tried my hand at being a chef; I can’t think of anything better than being paid to cook and eat? Other than that, then I may have actually been a plasterer.
6. What’s your favourite movie and why?
Not that anybody has probably heard of it, but it would be ‘The Lives of others’. It’s an obscure German film but very powerful and incredibly well written...I’d recommend it.
7. What do you expect to happen in the bridging finance industry over the next 12 months?
Generally I expect volumes to increase, I am finding more and more intermediaries are starting to see the benefits of using bridging products as an alternative to other methods of raising finance. Brokers are becoming more educated to bridging products and more importantly recognising a bridging opportunity be it for credit repair, to expand a portfolio or for chain breaking.
8. If you had a super power, what would it be?
Oh I’d have to go with flying. Save money on holidays and makes travelling to work easier.
9. What would you put in room 101 if you had the chance?
Well I think the obvious ones are Tax and VAT; but aside from that, it would be reality TV (with the exception of Masterchef). I don’t really watch much TV to be honest , so I’d happily throw all the soaps in there as well; and more importantly: Jeremy Kyle! Give me video games and books any day.
10. Well that brings us nicely to the final question...what’s your favourite book?
Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. It’s so good, I’m re-reading it at the minute. I also love Salems Lot by Stephen King; but can’t say the same for the film.
