Over & Out
Tuesday 17th January 2012Well that's it then... found out at last that they have fired me. It was only a matter of time I suppose... Juppy will be pleased (lanky bas___d). These are my last words for Bridging & Commercial as I get moved towards the door. I feel like an ageing footballer at the end of his career who is too stubborn to call it a day but who is too slow to play at the top level... (a bit like the Manchester United team at the moment). I don't want any of you to feel sorry for me, although I will put my bank details on Linked-in so that any donations can be sent... bottles will also be accepted and can be sent to the offices of the publication. For guidance only, I prefer St Emillion, or a nice Faustini 1 Rioja… for those that have still got some real money, Krug is my favourite Champers. For my last words I would like to sign off with something positive, but I find it hard to dig something out amid the gloom that has come out over the past few days. France and Spain have been down-graded, Portugal is now at junk bond...

Intrinsic are better than a halfway house
Tuesday 10th January 2012Did I say on the wagon last week? That lasted until Saturday and my friends 40th Birthday, a very good night but it left me with a bad hangover on the Sunday and a slow start on the Monday…I was warned by my father than the older you get the longer the hangover lingers, as usual I never took a blind bit of notice. Busy first week on the business front but most of it was tidying up the back end of last year and trying to get some of those deals completed that slipped through the net!! Had some great new cases presented and these showed encouragement for the New Year. I do, however, fear for some companies who have taken no heed of mine or anyone else’s advice and appear to be sticking to a failing model. It’s like watching people cling to a sinking ship with a life raft 50 yards away that they are scared to swim too…Madness!!!!! I have just finished the PWF board meeting with two of the best business partners you could have…both alcoholic smokers. On a serious note, these are...

Out of adversity comes opportunity
Tuesday 3rd January 2012Let me welcome you all back to what could be a real crunch year for the survival of the industry and wish each and every one of you a very Happy New Year... The facts speak for themselves, we are about to be faced by officially the worst ever economic situation which will not be averted, the only hope they have is to collectively play it down when in actual fact the answer would be to prepare for the worst and anything better is a bonus... Maybe not the most eloquent way to put things but it is at least the reality. Even with this hanging over us I am feeling strangely optimistic about certain sectors of the market, and I honestly feel that as long as you take every opportunity presented, you will continue to survive, and with a little luck alter your business to fit in with the changing climate. Whatever your own thoughts there is still truth in the saying "out of adversity comes opportunity”. So what do we look for in 2012? Perhaps more funding, but that won't come from the traditional sources so new financial instruments are being created to raise cash to fill the hole;...

Harmony in adversity
Tuesday 13th December 2011What a pleasant week we had, CML dinner then three good days in Malaga, lovely weather, interesting work and good food and drink...what more could one ask for...maybe the end to the crisis in Europe or even a resolution to the economic issues in the UK. The problem is that neither will happen and 2012 looks like it is certain to continue to get worse... And that’s a fact not my opinion. So what do we do about it, well according to the Government we should alienate ourselves from the rest of Europe and fight on single handedly, however, this has gone down like a lead balloon with the rest of the countries and our boys seem to be surprised...as much as it hurts me to say it, standing on your own in this climate is probably the worst thing we could do...we are an Island unloved by most of our neighbours and first on their economic assassination list, yet we seek to give them every excuse to load the gun. I am not as you know the most astute when it comes to politics but I do have half a brain when it comes to dealing with financial problems, and the way we are...

Xmas come early
Tuesday 6th December 2011The PM having sex with a pig was a little surreal for me as Sunday night TV (Black Mirror, Channel 4, Sunday 9.30pm) but it did remind me of some of the industry stalwarts who may have gone down this route in the past...I should keep this line to a minimum or face their wrath!!! Last week was the annual B & C Directors lunch which gave a chance for the great and the good to mingle with their peers...the fact is that there was a really positive atmosphere and what I felt was a degree of togetherness between everyone that I had not seen for a few months. It was a pleasant change to the negative vibes I have come across at other events. I would like to congratulate Stephen Johnson on the birth of his new son, it is a real privilege to be so lucky in life, and something I am sure he is well aware of. Secondly, Mo pulled off another great event; however, I am sure his ego told him that on the way in!!! On a business front, I was pleased to see the guys from West One who have done a few deals for some of my...
