10 Questions with... Matthew Anderson, Director at Fincorp

One of the few people with a legitimate reason for supporting Chelsea...

Katie-Jill Rowland speaks to Matthew Anderson, Director at Fincorp...

1.      How long have you been at Fincorp?

Since July 2004.

2.      What did you want to be when you were a Kid?

My parents tell me that when I was very young I wanted to be in the Navy. I can’t really remember that... but anyway, my preferences definitely changed as I grew up. I wanted to be a professional cricket player for a long time. Unfortunately though I wasn’t good enough to make a career of it.

B&C: Did you player any special position?

No, I was an all-rounder.

3.      If you could do anything you wanted this Sunday, what would it be?

I think I’d just like to have a lie-in and then go to the pub for a relaxing Sunday lunch.

B&C: And what would you have to eat?

I don’t know because there is just no way that it would ever happen. I have two young children and I can’t remember the last time it was possible to have a Sunday lie-in.

4.      Which football team do you support and why?

Well I support Chelsea but tend to watch AFC Wimbledon more often as the tickets are cheaper and more readily available.

B&C: So why do you support Chelsea?

Because my grandfather was a professional footballer and Chelsea was one of the teams he played for. Also my Dad grew up in Fulham and used to watch Chelsea too.

B&C: Wow, that’s impressive. Although I am guessing that that was before they were injected with Russian money?

Yes, it was in the 1920s so definitely!

5.      What is the best thing about your job?

There is a good working environment at Fincorp. We all get on really well so it’s sort of like a big family. Even when we have difficult situations to deal with, Nigel manages to lighten the atmosphere.

B&C: And what’s the worst thing about your job?

Well it’s never nice when you have to deliver bad news or deal with people who have defaulted on their loans. We’re a fairly small company so this is something we have to deal with ourselves.

6.      What would you be doing if you weren’t working at Fincorp?

I think I’d still be working in property. My brother always said he thought that I would make a good estate agent... I’m not sure whether that is a compliment or not.

7.      What’s your favourite movie and why?

The Shawshank Redemption – a great story with two excellent actors in, Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

8.      What do you expect to happen in the bridging finance industry over the next 12 months?

In the long run I expect our area of the finance industry to become more regulated, which is no bad thing. We have seen new players come to the market, expand rapidly only to fail spectacularly which has tarred us all with the same brush as far as the major lenders/banks are concerned. Increased, sensible regulation will hopefully deter all but the committed coming into the bridging market and not those with a few quid who like the look of the returns and think it’s easy – because it isn’t necessarily so!

9.      What you put in room 101 if you had the chance?

Bob Crow! I hope that if he was out of the way there would be a few less strikes on the undergrounds.

10. What’s your favourite book

I’m reading ‘The Bankers’ at the moment.

B&C: That sounds a bit heavy... don’t you read anything a bit more light-hearted?
Well... I do read farmyard stories to my 4-year-old. I know every world in the book so sometimes I change the story.... I don’t think he’s noticed yet.
