10 Questions with Ian Sutherland of Montello Bridging Finance

He's been at Montello for two years but would probably give it all up to be Charlize Theron's horse...

Katie-Jill Rowland speaks to Ian Sutherland, Managing Director of Montello Bridging Finance...

 1. How long have you been at Montello and what did you do previously?

I've been working at Montello since early 2009. I previously worked for Ballymore Properties as in-house counsel. Before that I worked as a solicitor for a US legal practice in the City.

2. What did you want to be when you were a Kid?

A bigger kid.

3. If you could do anything you wanted this Sunday, what would it be?

Go to the Wimbledon final.

4. Which football team do you support and why?

I'm not a football man. Rugby is my sport. I support both London Irish and Leinster.

5. What is the best and worst thing about your job?

I get a great deal of satisfaction seeing people realise opportunities that they wouldn't otherwise have been able to achieve or achieve at great expense. On the negative side, we see some fraud in our market and people generally not being truthful. As lawyers, we're probably more cautious than we should be in our due diligence but it's not just the waste of time but the realisation that there are some bad people out there.

6. If you could be any animal, what would you be?

Charlize Theron's horse.

7. What’s your favourite movie and why?

That's a tough one. Probably the Big Blue for pure escapism. Great film.

8. What do you expect to happen in the bridging finance industry over the next 12 months?

We're seeing a lot of competition coming into the market. This is being reflected in higher LTV's and lower interest charges. This is fantastic for the industry and the borrowers. We're still cautious about the property market and we don't expect much progress with regard to liquidity in the high street banking sector. We're adapting all the time to change and see the market continuing to expand.

9. What would you put in room 101 if you had the chance?

Greece.

10. If you could jet off to any place in the world today, where would you go?

Oops - cant put Greece down now. Probably the Rioja region in Spain.
