MPs would like their party leader to do more to tackle the current housing crisis, a recent survey has shown.

The ComRes poll revealed nine in ten MPs were worried that most under 30s in their constituency would not be able to afford to buy a home in a decade’s time.

The average deposit required to buy a home has risen to almost ten times the deposit required in the 1980s, while over the last two decades, the private rented sector has almost doubled, leaving many young people with the realisation they will be renting for life.

Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation, David Orr, said there was an overwhelming consensus among both the public and the politicians that the country was facing a housing crisis which required immediate attention.

“The next government must do everything in its power to get the nation building the homes it needs,” said David.

“8 in 10 don’t trust any of the main parties to effectively deal with the housing crisis – politicians should see this as a challenge and rise to it.”
