A solicitor’s trading powers have been frozen by the regulator due to suspicions regarding her recent conduct.

Victoria Emma Craig (SRA number 314945) was admitted as a solicitor on 3rd September 2003, recently she practised at Craig and Co Law Limited of 19 Queens Court, Wardley Street, Wigan, however her activities have now been frozen.

Last week saw the SRA intervene with the trading of Craig and Co Law Limited after it was suspected to have failed to comply with the SRA’s Code of Conduct and its Principles.

In addition to this, the SRA discovered last month that Craig and Co should have closed at the end of December due to it not holding a valid insurance policy and entered the extended policy period on the 1st of October (EPP).

While referring to this firm and another which did not close when the SRA expected, Robert Loughlin, SRA Executive Director of Operations and Quality, said: "These two firms do not appear to have valid insurance and have not closed properly so we are investigating them in order to protect the public interest.

“While the majority of those that entered the EPP have worked with us closely and provided assurance about their circumstances, these two have not provided us with the information we require to be satisfied that client matters have been dealt with properly."

Now, the regulator decided to intervene in Victoria Emma Craig’s affairs after it had grounds to infer that she had failed to comply with the SRA Principles 2011 and the Solicitors Code of Conduct 2011.

When defining the act of an intervention, the SRA stated: “We can, in effect, close a practice. We call this an "intervention". An intervention is a step taken to protect clients' interests and money, in the public interest.

“It is a protective measure, and does not necessarily mean we have made any findings against a regulated firm or individual.”

More on this as it unfolds.
